PESA/TESA

Sperm Retrieval Technique in Kallakurichi

TESA and PESA are sperm retrieval techniques for males with low sperm production or problems with infertility. This procedure is usually performed by a trained IVF specialist who will perform the procedure under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia.

Sperm retrievals are typically performed on the day of egg retrieval. Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA), percutaneous sperm aspiration (PESA), and testicular sperm extraction (TESE) are the sperm retrieval techniques used in IVF treatments.

At Rhea IVF and Women’s Hospitals, we have compiled the best team of IVF specialists who are determined to help you in any way they can. To ensure your comfort, safety, and confidentiality, this procedure is usually performed under the guidance of trained specialists and nurses in a safe and secure environment.

Who needs TESA and PESA?

  • Men who have the following issues
  • Poor sperm production due to testicular issues
  • Genetic abnormalities, past infection
  • History of vasectomy

TESE is usually performed under local anaesthesia but can be performed in the clinic too. Patients who cryopreserve their sperm usually take up this procedure for future IVF or ICSI.

Typically, it is performed on males with no sperm found in the sperm analysis.

Is the TESA or PESA procedure painful?

  • This is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that takes only a few minutes and does not leave a scar, etc.
  • The patient can leave the hospital or clinic on the same day.
  • Painkillers may be given for a day or two after the procedure.
  • Patients usually return to normalcy two days after the procedure.
  • After the procedures, the patient is usually advised to wear tight-fitting pants to support the scrotum.

How does TESA/PESA work?

Both TESA and PESA are usually carried out in conjunction with ICSI to give the sperm the best possible chance of fertilising the egg. The procedure is carried out mostly on the day of egg collection or shortly before the IVF cycle. Most of the sperm is frozen until it is needed.

The goal of sperm retrieval (TESA and PESA)

  • An adequate number of sperm for both immediate use and cryopreservation is collected.
  • To retrieve the highest quality of sperm.
  • To minimise the damage to the reproductive tract.

The friendly and professional team at Rhea Fertility Centre is happy to answer any other questions you may have about these procedures.
