Polyps

Polyps are abnormal growths that can occur in various parts of the body, including the uterus. Uterine Polyps are growths that develop in the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium (the innermost layer of the uterus). Most uterine polyps are benign, but some may be cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous (precancerous polyps). They can vary in size, from as small as a sesame seed to as large as a golf ball or even larger, and can attach to the uterine wall via either a thin stalk or a large base.

Symptoms

  • Abnormal Uterine bleeding (heavy or prolonged menstrual periods)
  • Irregular Menstrual cycles
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • Infertility
  • Difficulty in conceiving

Causes

  • Hormonal imbalances (elevated levels of Estrogen)
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of polyps or endometrial cancer

Treatments

  • Birth Control Pills: to regulate hormone levels and reduce polyp growth.
  • Hysteroscopy: A minimally invasive procedure that uses a thin camera to visualize and remove polyps.
  • Endometrial Ablation: A procedure that uses heat or cold to destroy the uterine lining and remove polyps.

Early detection and treatment can help prevent complications and improve overall health. If you are experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding or other symptoms, consult with us at Rhea IVF & Women’s Hospital to determine if uterine polyps may be the underlying cause.
