Ovarian Stimulation

Ovarian Stimulation

Ovarian stimulation is a type of treatment that is used to produce more eggs through stimulation. This treatment is often used in women who have problems with their ovaries. During Ovarian Stimulation, your body will be injected with hormones and given oral medications that stimulate or induce your ovaries to produce as many eggs as possible within a short period. In the final procedure, the final matured oocytes or eggs are picked up in a procedure called “ovum pickup”, which is done under anaesthesia.

Ovarian stimulation, in general, can be understood as a procedure that is done to produce as many eggs to increase the number of embryos to aid in assisted reproductive technology. Through this procedure, the quality of the woman’s eggs is reassured and it can also help to increase the number of eggs that the woman produces.

At Rhea IVF and Women’s Hospital, we use this procedure to induce fertility in couples who are facing problems in conceiving naturally. We take all means and precautions necessary during the process and under the supervision of our expert doctor, Dr K . Shanmugavadivu, you can only expect the safest and best possible outcomes out of this procedure.

The hormones used in Ovarian stimulation

These are the key hormones that are used for ovarian stimulation.

  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
  • GnRH (Agonist protocol)
  • GnRH Antagonist protocol
  • HCG

Ovarian stimulation for Natural cycle & IUI

In this minimal drugs or injectables are given from day 2 of periods, with the aim of producing a single oocyte or egg, with a trigger injection being given for oocyte maturation. This is then followed by naturally timed intercourse or the IUI procedure, which is done as per following the minimal ovarian stimulation protocol.

Side effects of ovarian stimulation

  • There is an increased risk of multiple births as multiple eggs are released, and there is an increased chance that multiple eggs will implant into the Uterus.
  • Breast tenderness
  • Swelling, or rash in areas where the hormones are injected
  • Increase in mood swings and depression
  • It comes with the risk of Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which leads to enlarged ovaries, abdominal pain, and bloating.
